Might I suggest on a variant hull, to extend the overhang along the sides, and have a battery of turrets set there.

repost

Backstory: The Goliath Class Juggernaught came back to the yards a hell of a mess, her bow half blown off, hull breeches over 30% of her hull, 90% of her weapons offline or outright blown to hell. But still her captain made it to the yards before her engines died in a beautiful display of colors and metal (Her upper Port engine exploded nearly setting off the tylium had not 3 unlucky knuckledraggers slammed the doors as the explosion happened.). and to top off the whole mess her underslung pod was for lack of better words in total fraking pieces. 3 missiles ripped the once functional pod to a current state of charred metal and..and indescribable carnage. We hauled her into to an open ship stall once all the fireworks were put out and began to clean up the mess. Her captain fought tooth and nail, literally, to keep her from being scrapped. so happened another Goliath came in worse shape and so she was scrapped to repair the Juggernaught. Seeing how badly both heads were hit it was decided to split her head so to speak and add some more forward firing HKEW's in the upper head to help the lower jaw HKEW's. And Her underslung pod well we flipped it upside down and made it more durable to damage. 2 yrs later the Juggernaught left the yards. Never saw her again.
