This is something I produced while thinking about what real world space conflict probably would be like. Personally I don't think major space fleets and battles are realistic for economic and technology reasons - why build a massive fleet when a few well placed nukes can destroy it all? Thus I figured that MAD would be exported to space, with the threat of mutual nuclear devastation, on the planetary level, being used to keep the peace.

Having come to that conclusion I figured that the majority of combat ships would be essentially the equivalent of modern nuclear submarines, tasked with lurking in deep space for months on end until the call comes in to slag another planet. Thus this was born.

The drawing still needs work, and the physics behind it are only half formed in my mind but it is only a wip. I have it as an ESA ship due to patriotism but if I get this too the point where it's pretty good I'll probably to a NASA equivalence.

Well, it looks plain compared to sci-fi type ships...which are actually perfectly acceptable for your premise. Good call and not a bad design per-se. My only issue is this is more of a semi-mobile space station design than a ship really. It really should look a bit more like a ship. Also, if we assume stealth doesn't work real well in space, which it really doesn't, then this thing would have to hide in the asteroid belt, the rings of a gas giant, or behind a moon of some sort. That sort of position requires it to be close to micro meteoroid zones, so all the "sail" you have is a really bad idea. If it unfurls them to wait, it get spotted real easy, if it unfurls them to travel, it gets spotted nearly instantly. I would recommend at least a slightly sci-fi feel your design, if only to simulate the boomer aspect you are seeking, dark hulls, stealthy curves or angles like we have now, and some sort of made up cooling system. Here's a though, suppose it dumps heat to a fridge sized system, and then trails it back via cable till well clear of it, cutting it loose and having it use small maneuvering verniers to radically change its vector and velocity when on approach? After a bit, the fridge's systems fail to contain the heat, and it is released, allowing it to both provide some measure of thermal protection and act a bit like a decoy at the same time. A given ship could carry half a dozen ready, with another half a dozen in storage, giving the ship as many as half a dozen ready up decoys for its final run up to launch approach, and a similar number for its run back to deep space. You might even want to consider a missile collier design to rearm the survivors of an attack for a second potential strike.

Hmmm, this must be a pretty good idea chief, it made me actually think about the concept quite a bit, and I really like it. Perhaps a hunter killer design to counter or escort it too?

I agree with you that stealth elements would have to be improved for an attack run on a system. Most of the time though I figure it would just be sitting in an uninhabited system or literally the middle of deep space.

I tired to make it look somewhat like the ISS when I made it (my next project is going to be an MS paint version of the ISS) but the art could do with being a bit more snazzy and sci-fi (near future defiantly).

As for hunter killers and a missile collier I like the ideas. Though I'm thinking maybe more of a central deep space missile depot instead of a supply ship.

So FTL exists in this setting in some form then?

Yeah. I figure some kind of point singularity drive messes up the laws of physics around the ship, kinda like a warp bubble, allowing it to travel FTL in relation to the rest of the universe while seemingly at sub light speeds. Larger ships could then bring smaller ones along inside the bubble (ie: fighters/escort ships).

That wouldn't be until later though, after improvements in combat ships had made boomer's unworkable as the only line of defence/deterrent.

I just knocked this up for the ISS. I'm combining the two projects into one, as I'll be using bits from the ISS for the ESA ship. What you see here is the primary solar arrays and part of the superstructure.

And a more snazzy version of the ship from the front view.

New art style is in keeping with what I'm going for on the ISS

I like where you are going with this Belschaft; near future stuff has so many possibilities. I hope you expand on this!

Update on the ISS. I provided it on a black background for contrast, and because it makes more sense than a white one.

In case anyone is interested I'm working on a parts sheet. I'll put a version of it up when I've got more on it.

Well, this ended up kinda stopping abruptly the first time round, mainly because I got bored and frustrated trying to get the ISS done. But I still liked the original concept, and am re-visiting it. Here's what I've produced in the last few hours (in case anyone wonders, no the Space Shuttle isn't mine. That's Darth Panda's over at shipbucket).

No FTL this time round either; I'm talking real near future, 2050ish.

Major Progress. The bits in the red boxes are the important ones.

Yup, point defence guns. They'd be rather nifty offensively as well, due to the lack of hevy armour or shields.

Last update for now, I've got it somewhere I'm happy with for now, I just need to add detail.

Location: I have absolutely no bloody idea...
the beautiful part of this, is it's so simple it's literally plug and play as far as customization and modification.

very well done.
