Glad you like them Zeus. Though I actually have some changes to them that I will post tomorrow once I'm home from my trip. I think these new versions will be the ones I use for my universe.

I decided that I needed Cylon War-era escorts more than fall-era escorts. So I took Zeus's ideas back to the ship that started this whole chain, the Berzerk (smaller version of course). The descriptions follow my own personal universe, rather than canon, however feel free to use them for your own verses.

In 1942, the Canceron Navy commissioned the first of its Berzerk class cruisers. Rugged and powerful, the ships were well liked by their crews and proved to be very effective in the few skirmishes they engaged in. However, Canceron did not have the large military budgets of some of the other Colonies, and could only afford a relative handful of Berzerks for the most important missions. Having a need for smaller, and especially cheaper, ships, the Navy of Canceron turned to General Shipping and Arms, the company that designed and built the Berzerk.

GSA's solution, was to use a shorten version of the Berzerk, using the same engines and head assembly, but removing the expensive gun decks and the heavy armour that protected them. What was left was a slim, lightweight hull that with a few tweaks, ended up being a very customizable and useful ship during the Cylon War, the Vauxhall class.

Image

The Vauxhall class is exactly 660 meters in length, and is equipped with a moderate amount of weaponry for its time. 2 twin 100cm mounts give it decent firepower against small ships, and 4 single 88cm rapid fire mounts join in once in range. However, the Vauxhall's greatest strength, much like its larger brother the Berzerk, is its actual hull strength. Most Canceron ships are very rugged, and the Vauxhall is no exception; reports during the war show many ships continuing to operate with entire sections of hull blown off.

Another advantage of the Vauxhall is its adaptability. Several variants were built during the war, as new Cylon threats appeared and new vessels were required.

Image

The Firebolt was the largest sub-class built on the Vauxhall frame, and with the Cylon's excessive use of fighter swarm tactics, its easy to see why. The 100cm guns were replaced with 2 x 63cell Starfox ship to fighter missile launchers. With the addition of 4 dedicated illuminators, each Firebolt can engage over 40 targets simultaneously. These ships were so in demand, that for 18 months they were the only ships being built by Canceron for the new unified fleet. Even after the end of the war, they continued in service until the late 80's before finally being retired.

Image

The Impreza was a minor sub-class of the Vauxhall frame, built towards the end of the war as the Colonies were finally on the offensive and heavy ship killers were needed. A pair of 4 cell Starslug ship to ship missile launchers replaced the 100cm guns on the Vauxhall, giving the Impreza a hard punch once the targets defensive grid was reduced. As more battlestars joined the fleet, the Impreza's were removed to second line duties, and were immediately decommissioned after the end of the war.

Image

The Passat is another rare subclass of the Vauxhall, and filled the duties of an armed scout ship early in the war, in usually unsuccessful attempts to locate Cylon bases and strongholds. These were dangerous, solo missions, and the ships suffered heavily. However, the ships only accepted volunteers for crew, and they never left port without a full compliment. After the war, the remaining ships were demilitarized and sold off to private interests, with several exploration firms snapping them up for long range settlement mapping.

The Harpy class has also been redesigned as a fall-era area defense frigate.

Image

8 x 15 cell Starfire ship to fighter missile launchers, plus 8 x 100cm dual purpose twin mounts give her heavy defensive fire for a ship of her size. Like the Firebolt during the war, she also has additional illuminators for the Starfires, letting her engage up to 60 targets simultaneously.

Hey everyone!

This time, I'm ruining a drawing that I drew of a drawing the Canis drew. This will mark the official reboot of my universe, so everything prior to this post is no longer a part of it in their current forms. I hope to do more drawings over the summer since I'm only taking one class for the semester, so with any luck there will be a lot more coming soon.

So, without further interruptions, let's begin. I present to you, HMS Unity.

Image

HMS Unity was a Virgonese exploration vessel launched and commissioned in 1659 (UCT). The lead ship of her class, she massed over 3.5 billion metric tons and was 3,069 meters long. Unity was designed under the auspices of Emperor Aulus Vespa’s pet project, Prometheus. Prometheus was a Virgonese project to leave their solar system (Helios Beta) and explore the other systems of the Cyrannus cluster with the main goal of locating the remaining 10 tribes of Kobol.

Without faster-than-light technology, the voyage would be very long; HMS Unity required 313 days to cross the distance between Helios Beta and Helios Alpha each way. For this reason, Unity was built around a large cylindrical rotating section containing the crew quarters and work stations, all wrapped around a low gravity hydroponics garden at its core. Fresh fruits and vegetables were grown to supplement prepackaged foods for the crew of 16,000 for the duration of her intended 5-year mission (1 year in transit each way and up to 3 years exploring Helios Alpha).

Unity was not designed as a warship but was moderately armed with defensive weapons. Twenty batteries of 32-round missile launchers were arranged along the vessel’s spines and engineering section and were equipped with short and medium range interceptor missiles, along with 96 small caliber rail guns for close in protection. However, Unity was also equipped with an aerospace wing of 100 trans-atmospheric fighters and 30 support craft; these smaller ships could be used for defense or scouting missions both in space and within a planetary atmosphere. Should anything of value be found, there were 12 spheriod dropships available to transport personnel and equipment to the planet for further study. Unity was designed to carry civilians (1,949 scientists, specialists, and diplomats) to assist with research and contacts and an expeditionary battalion (449 officers and 2,557 troops) of Royal Marines to provide shipboard and planetary security. The Unity was run by a crew of 684 officers and 7,875 enlisted personnel, with the aerospace wing adding another 525 officers and 1,946 enlisted to the total.

HMS Revelation was the second ship of the class and was completed in 1664, while HMS Accord (renamed under construction to HMS Emperor Vespa in honor of the late monarch) was launched in 1667. The fourth and final ship, HMS Destiny, was completed to a modified design with an extended habitation section which could accommodate 45,000 people for 2 years and was launched in 1670.

Questions, comments, and concerns are most welcome as always! Thanks for looking.

Thanks Kurt!

Everybody plays in the time frame from the Cylon War to Operation Return. I want to explore the earlier times, when it was Colony verses Colony.

One benefit that has is that you don't have to worry about genocide.

True. But you don't have genocidal robots running around shooting anything with a pulse.

Thanks Ivanho!

So, I just realized I forgot to post HMS Destiny last night. So let's correct that flaw now.

While Unity, Revelation, and (to a lesser extent) Emperor Vespa were designed as exploration ships, HMS Destiny was redesigned under construction to be a troop transport. An additional 20 missile batteries were installed, which featured ship-to-ship and ship-to-surface missiles instead of interceptors, along with more defensive rail guns. The ship's company was increased to 732 officers and 11,587 enlisted to man the additional weapons and other systems. As a troop transport, Destiny dispensed with the hydroponics garden and scientific laboratories in favor of large barracks. This allowed her to carry over 32,000 personnel between Virgon and Helios Alpha.

Destiny also served as the basis for the refits conducted on her sister ships. Unity underwent a minor refit in 1667 after her first mission to Helios Alpha, sacrificing some of her hydroponics garden for enough quarters to house an additional 500 civilians and senior military officers along with an additional marine battalion during her second trip. In 1673 she was refitted into transport configuration by removing the remaining gardens to add another marine battalion and prefabricated base structures. Revelation had her minor refit in 1669 after her first mission and was refitted as a transport in 1676. When Emperor Vespa was launched in 1667, she had already been converted to the Unity's refitted standard, and was turned into a transport in 1672.

Together with her sister ships, Destiny brought equipment and personnel to construct a forward staging base on Zeus's moon of Nike during the lead up to the Virgonese invasion of Helios Alpha. The base was constructed throughout the 1670's and was used as a waystation for the transport ships after the Virgon-Tauron Treaty was signed in 1677 which saw Virgon troops being staged directly on Tauron.

Following on from my earlier post, let me present: HMS Titan

Image

After designing the Unity and her sisters, the Prometheus project began working on a larger vessel that could travel between the two binary groups in the Cyrannus cluster; a distance of over 0.16 light years. With the technology available at the time, the trip would take over 4 years each way. Compared to Unity, this new vessel would need to be even larger to carry all the fuel needed. Alas, it was not to be. The designers had been working on a truly massive, 8000-meter-long, 25-billion-metric-ton vessel, code named Titan, for the voyage when Emperor Marcus order the project to redirect efforts in support of his invasion plans.

Instead of carrying 50,000 people to explore Helios Gamma and Delta, the Titan design was repurposed to carry an entire army of 300,000 troops, along with 12 aerospace squadrons with 250 small craft and 5,000 personnel, and a ship’s crew of 30,000 to the worlds of Helios Alpha. The Titan was also well armed to both support Virgonese troops on the ground and to engage the nascent Caprican and Gemenon naval forces. She was equipped with 50 large missile batteries with a hundred missiles each, and an almost impenetrable close in weapons array.

Five vessels were originally ordered in 1667, though two were cancelled after the Virgon-Tauron Treaty was signed. HMS Titan was launched in 1679 and, after a very rapid shakedown, was sent to Tauron carrying the 2nd Expeditionary Army. HMS Olympian was launched in 1681 and carried the 3rd Expeditionary Army to Tauron. She remained in orbit of Tauron as a Command and Control vessel for the Virgonese ground forces until Titan returned the following year when HMS Titan and HMS Unity arrived carrying the 1st Expeditionary Army and the 45th Marine Regiment. Together, the three vessels traveled to Picon and conducted a planetary landing against the non-space going tribe, occupying and claiming the largest continent for the Emperor. HMS Eternal was launched in 1682.

To this day, the Titan class remains the largest and most massive vessels ever constructed in the Cyrannus Cluster.

As you probably guessed, this was one of the driving forces behind updating Canis's Babylon 5 drawing. I hope you all like it!

Here is the last of the large Virgon interstellar transports: HMS Iapyx

After successfully invading Picon, the Virgonese strategy in Helios Alpha switched from expansion to fortification. Using large Titan class ships and smaller Unity class vessels, Virgon would deploy ground troops and fighter squadrons to Picon and Tauron throughout the 1680s and 90s. After suitable docking facilities were constructed, the ships were also used to lead groups of Royal Navy warships into the system: the smaller ships could refuel and restock from the transports and their crews could be sent over for R and R during their 11-month long voyage.

However, the Titans and Unitys were incredibly expensive vessels. The Unitys, and to a lesser degree the Titans, had been designed for redundancy and longevity, while the Titans had also been designed for capability. The operating costs were staggering, but before the Virgon-Tauron Treaty their abilities were vital. With a decent foothold in the system, especially after the invasion of Picon, the Royal Navy decided that cheaper, more efficient vessels should take over the interstellar runs and while the larger ships remained in the Alpha system as fleet tenders and command posts to reduce costs. They would only return to Virgon for yard work or, if needed, for an exceptionally large transportation lift.

Image

The Iapyx class was designed to move personnel between Helios Alpha Helios Beta as efficiently as possible. They were smaller than even the Unity class, stretching only 2,525 meters long and massing less than 1.5 billion metric tons. With Royal Navy warships available in both systems, heavy armor and weaponry was deemed unnecessary. Instead, only a token defense grid consisting of 6 missile batteries, a dozen small guns, and hanger space for a squadron of 20 fighters and half a dozen support craft was provided. Like her predecessors, Iapyx had a rotating habitation section with a non-rotating engineering section aft. Unlike her predecessors, however, there were no large spines running along the habitation section. Instead, a large solid keel ran through the center of the habitation section in the low gravity core, where the hydroponics garden would have been on the Unity. Iapyx was equipped with 4 main engines that were fully encased in the engineering section; these engines were modified versions of the engines used for the Unity class that were more efficient, but less powerful. The result was that, even though Iapyx was lighter than Unity, she did not accelerate any faster.

The habitation section was where the crew of 273 officers and 2487 enlisted (including the aerospace squadron personnel), and up to 6500 passengers, lived and worked. It was 850 meters long and 565 meters in diameter and was equipped with several recreational areas for passenger comfort. While passengers were normally military personnel, the Royal Navy did allow civilians to purchase travel vouchers as the build up began to slow down. This allowed service members to bring their families along to their new duty stations, greatly improving morale. Corporations also purchased travel on the ships to scout out potential new markets or resources, often with permission of the Emperor. The accommodations were less spacious than HMS Unity, but they were still better than those found on Royal Navy warships.

HMS Iapyx was commissioned in 1684, with 11 sister ships following over the next 5 years. The ships were almost constantly in use, with one ship departing Virgon or Tauron every 3 months. Iapyx and her sisters would remain in use for over a hundred years, until after the Picon Revolutionary War.

I hope you all like it. This was actually my first attempt at what became the Unity, but I felt it was too "modern" looking compared to my B5 knock-off so it became a replacement instead. I plan to switch gears for a litttle while and do some actual warships, but I wanted to get these out of the way first.

Let me know what you think.

The Caprican Situation

Virgon and Leonis were the first tribes to develop space flight in the Cyrannus system; however Caprica and Gemenon were not far behind. Scientists on both planets were captivated by the closeness of their binary partner, and they focused their research towards space flight. Radio communications was eventually achieved between the two planets, and their nascent space programs began to work together. On the 21st of Maius, 1587, a Caprican space craft docked at Gemenese space station orbiting Gemenon, the first contact between tribes in the Helios Alpha system. Over the following decades, travel and trade between the two worlds increased rapidly.

Image

The DY-100 type transport was a Caprican space craft designed by Delphi Yards in the late 1640s and was typical of the vessels used by Caprican shipping companies to move bulk cargos between Caprica and Gemenon. At 292 meters long, the standard DY-100 was designed for a crew of 15 and could carry 750,000 cubic meters of cargo in eight bays amidships. The sail contained the ships sensor and communication equipment as well as a docking tube for mooring to space stations. The engine array at the back of the ship was tuned for efficiency, but a lightly loaded DY-100 could travel between planetary orbits in about a week.

Relations between Caprica and Gemenon began to sour in the late 1640s, as elements of the Monotheist Church (usually referred to as Monads) began to push against the polytheistic majorities on Gemenon and Caprica. Trade and tourism fell off rapidly as the Monads became more violent in their opposition until November 1651, when the Monads (which included about 35% of the total Gemenese population) broke away entirely from the polytheist government of Gemenon and formed their own government. The Monads had infiltrated the highest levels of the Gemenese government and police forces prior to the split, and they were able to capture nearly all of the Gemenese weapons caches and space craft. Shortly after, a short undeclared war erupted between the Monads and the remaining polytheists on Gemenon, ending with the capitulation of the polytheist government.

The Caprican government had attempted to help the polytheist Gemenese government by supplying their police with extra weapons and equipment. However, at the time Caprica did not have a large arms manufacturing industry and was therefore limited in the amount of help they could provide. By late 1650 however, the government of Caprica began ordering large amounts of weapons and equipment as well as recruiting and training additional 'police forces' for eventual use on Gemenon. Several new factories were built shortly after the Monad independence and research into new weapons began.

On Februarius 3rd, 1651, a group of twenty ships left orbit of Gemenon headed to Caprica. Seventeen transport ships had been converted by the Monads with into rudimentary missiles to be flown into major Caprican cities. Three other ships accompanied them to remove the crews once they were locked on course. By the time anyone on Caprica saw the ships and realized what was happening, the transports were already abandoned and heading for their targets. At the time, Caprica did not have any armed spaced craft, but that did not stop some of the ships in orbit of Caprica from trying to stop the kamikaze transports. Ten Caprican vessels were able to ram a Monad ship, destroying both craft in the process. Another Monad vessel was destroyed when it slammed into a cargo pod dropped into its path by a Caprican ship. Three Monad ships had developed navigational or engine errors and would pass well clear of the planet. However, three Monad ships made it passed the improvised Caprican defenses. One vessel, which was headed for Caprica City, broke up in the atmosphere; several suburbs on the east side of city were heavily damaged by the falling remains. The other two vessels, however, slammed into the city of Martok. The city was completely destroyed and the twin impacts carved a scar like valley into the landscape.

Three days later, a horrified and still reeling Caprican government nationalized all police forces on the planet and formed them into a military to protect the planet from future Monad attacks. Armed space craft also needed to be built or converted from vessels already in operation.

Image

The DY-151 type is a typical example of the armed vessels, called Sentinels, built following the Monad attack. The DY-151 type was built by Delphi Yards and was a modification of the DY-100 design in order to get it into service as quickly as possible. The ships were armed with what ever weapons and equipment was available while they were being built, and they were upgraded when newer equipment became available. The example shown here, Sentinel-13, carries a 56 mm rail gun and a 9-round launcher firing Arrow missiles, along with more powerful sensors and communications. Typical of the new Caprican military ships, Sentinel-13 has a smaller cargo area compared to its civilian base model which was often used to carry fuel tanks to feed its more powerful engine array. Sentinel-13 carried a typical crew compliment of 35, though that number could fluctuate depending on what was installed at any given time.

Caprica's new navy grew quickly; after 3 months, a new vessel was launching twice a week. The Monads continued to launch kamikaze attacks against Caprica throughout 1651 and 1652, but the sentinel ships prevented any vessels from making planetfall. By the end of 1652 however, Caprica had built enough ships to protect itself and go on the offensive. A dozen sentinels, including #13, arrived in Gemenon orbit and destroyed all ships and stations. Transports carrying troops and weapons arrived shortly after and began landing troops using orbit-to-surface interface craft as the armed ships bombarded Monad strongholds.

A coalition force of Caprican and rebel Gemenese eventually succeeded in toppling the Monad government after months of fighting. The polytheist government was reestablished, and Caprica began standing down most of its newly created military. Several sentinel ships remained in operation, however; always on the look out for a possible Monad terrorist attack. Less than a decade later, the sentinel ships would be called on again to meet a new potential threat to Caprica, the Virgons.

Very nice! I like how the exigencies pushed Caprica into "using what they had" to deal with the situation; it makes the story all the more "real".
