I assumed that they do from the start.

The front engines don't have enough clearance; the exhaust nozzles would be within inches of the ground, if not in the ground, the the rear engines couldn't pivot 90 degrees while on the ground without hitting the ground after beginning their rotation. The engines would need to be well above the cabin roof.

Agreed, not enough clearance for the engines to pivot.

There's a civilian model with overhead engines up front...I'd post the image, but I don't have access to it at the moment.

If you did, you'd be guessing wrong. ;-)

There would be a lot of work needed to make it viable in a "we're trying to keep things mechanically realistic" way, as the show tried to do with their industrial design. That to me sort of strays from the "modding" aspect.

YMMV

If you gull wing the engine wings you could create enough clearance. you may need to shorten the engines as well though.

That might work for the forward ones, but not the aft pair. Different engines would certainly help; something shorter and wider - sort of like what's on Garuda.

The shuttle can already lift off vertically with the engines it has, so although it would be a cool visual, and probably something they'd do for Blood and Chrome, it's hardly necessary.

Say, Conan, how about an Aerilon Guard Viper Mk 2 to go with the Mk 3 you did?
