My dad has a whole cellar full of preserved foods in five gallon buckets. Stuff is expensive, but it claims to last 25 years, and having tasted it, its really not bad at all. High caloric content, low volume while in storage, reasonable flavor, and better than two decades of storage capability.
I'll get the webpage from my dad for his site, but there are all sorts of places you can check it out on line. Our tech and Colonial tech are similar in many ways, so i wold imagine that this sort of thing would be fairly easy for them really.
