A ground force delivery vehicle
This ship is designed to launch a unpowered landing vehicle into a hostile ground environment from orbit. The transport releases its dropship just above a planet's atmosphere. The dropship enters the atmosphere using an old style heat shield to protest in from re-entry temperatures and friction. Once through the upper layers of the atmosphere the heat shield in jettisoned breaking into 4 parts and fired outward away from the primary vehicle, These super heated remain os the heat shield are intended to draw off heat seeking ordinance. During its glide to the surface the dropship is capable of deploying chaff and flares to further mask its decent. The ship fires rockets at a predetermined height to slow forward and downward momentum hopefully allowing the skids to remain intact upon contact with the surface. The belly of the dropship is however heavily reinforced and is capable of absorbing the shock of impact and the skid to a stop on its own without additional damage to the craft. The ship is unpowered and descends in radio silence to eliminate heat and electronic signatures that can be targeted by a hostile force. The dropship is theoretically re-usable but often that is not the case. These dropships are piloted by Fleet Marines while the transport is supplied with Fleet Flight Crew. Cargo capacity is high and a second (upper) deck is available for additional troops. These vessels operate only from the enlarged hangers of an Assaultstar.

The concept sounds interesting, but I think it's terminally flawed. Gliders always depended on ideal conditions, and if things weren't ideal, glider ops tended to be fail...often drastically. There's no energy to abort and go around if the landing zone is fouled or held by the enemy; as soon as it's released, it is committed.

I think the idea of a binary delivery system is sound, but the lander should have some form of maneuver engines.

I could probably add something small. I was basing the idea on the British operation to take the Pegasus Bridge on D-Day.

Much better! In Operation Deadstick (the operation to capture the bridge), six Horsa gliders were used, with two of them being destroyed during landing (one due to a fence and one that broke in half). Compare that to what happened to the gliderborn element of 1st Airborne during Market Garden... Gliders are cool teaching platforms and recreational craft, but I'm not sure I'd trust them in combat unless I was so short on production capability that I didn't have any choice.

I agree with Kurt but I would love to lay with both craft, btw I use to fly gliders in my youth.

Nice concept Schultz189 you've got some good ideas, I've always been a fan of t.o.s shuttle, yours reminds me of the eagle transporter from space 1999 Canis drew for some reason, I can see this as a multi purpose ship, troop carrier, Medevac and so on, how about a top view?
Bravo sir
