Overview;
Much to the perpetual embarrassment of Earthforce's Naval Division, the David-class had proven to be a mediocre attempt at the so-called 'Sharlin-killer' design ideal. Some decried the 'waste' of a hull the size of a Nova-class on such a small, if more idealised, weapons package as the David-class had been fitted with, and still more were opposed even to the Flight-II variants still found themselves sorely lacking in fire-zone coverage as opposed to even the obsolete Nova-class. Admiral Eli Cauldall, the main force behind the creation of the Alexander-class Heavy Cruiser, pushed even further after the prior success, calling for a ship that adopted the historical strengths of a Nova-class, whilst still pushing forward with innovations developed by the REFORGE Programme.

For once, even the proponents of a more cautious development process (dominated by such disparate groups as the main R&D leads of Project Fireborn, fiscally-minded procurement officers, and even members of Earthforce stretching from Intelligence to the Naval Division who were concerned whether so rapidly pushing ahead with rearmament would convince the Minbari to resume their nigh-genocidal war) agreed with this. The Earth Alliance's status as a true guarantor of peace and the status-quo in the known worlds had understandably suffered a serious reverse in the wake of the Human-Minbari War, to the point where fractious LONAW members, once reassured by human diplomacy, backed by human guns, quarrelled with each other. Even non-League worlds such as the Narn and the Lumati, and third-parties like Raiders were contributing to the troubles. Admiral Cauldall expressed the sentiment against this rather emphatically in a meeting of the Joint Chiefs; "We're looking at a galaxy that's gone to hell in a handbasket, and we're going to need a hell of a big hammer to knock it all back into shape."

In early 2258, just a few months before the Alexander-class' original prototype was launched, a team of Rocketdyne engineers, nearly all of whom had either worked on the Nova-class or the David-class, were briefed on the new project and asked to sit down to come up with a design. The result was produced relatively quickly, proving to be an evolution more than a revolution in design terms. Imagined as more of a brawler to the David-class' sniper, the new design was titled the Goliath-class. Each of the original Westinghouse LPA1000 Heavy Plasma Cannons running along the main body of the vessel was replaced with a single turreted GenEle GAD-16-U laser, the so-called 'Terminator', allowing for raking attacks at a range of forty-thousand kilometres, nearly a hundred and ten-percent increase in effective range over the original armament. The LPA1000's mounted on either side of the 'hammerhead' at the fore of the vessel were instead replaced with the stalwart Westinghouse M152 PPC's which offered a modest range increase of twenty kilometres along with a fire-rate of triple the LPA's.

The design team also made pains to point out in their notes that the 'Terminator' laser could also operate in a pulsed mode, which while infinitesimal in duration compared to plasma weapons, allowed a theoretical RoF of eight-hundred pulses a minute. This however was mitigated by power-management concerns, as the designers also saw fit to return the original 'Mjolnir' heavy plasma mortars to the hammerhead of the design. Even the complete removal of Starfury bays, leaving only enough space for a pair of shuttles, to be replaced by additional reactors could only bring the lasers mounted on the Goliath-class to around three-hundred and fifty pulses a minute, sinking to around fifty pulses when the prow-mounted PPC's were in use. To make up for this, the design team saw fit to re-incorporate four of the original missile banks that had been removed during the David-class update, but also adopting the new placement of a cargo shuttle bay in lieu of the hanger from the original Nova-class.

Defences were not shirked either, with the Goliath's armour scheme formed not out of the staple 'AEGIS' composite used by Earthforce over the past twenty years, but rather a new blend derived from Project Fireborn's collusion with Earthforce Naval Intelligence's R&D section, called 'CARBONAT'. A five-centimetre plate of the new armour was estimated to be capable of resisting the neutron-beam fire of a Sharlin-class War Cruiser by as much as one point seven seconds longer than the older armour, but offered much greater resistance to conventional laser and plasma-type weapons. In the same token, the MkII DGEP's were upgraded to a new MkIII standard, based off the WRX-1028 which featured a new rotary barrel design to allow for sustained fire-rates the likes of which previous Interceptors had never been able to reach.

The end result was a launching of a first prototype, the namesake EAS Goliath, on the 15th of March 2259. The new dreadnought saw its first action on the Ch'lonas border, where a squadron of Selkanth destroyers attempted to engage it in a predatory action with mid-range particle beam fire, seemingly believing it to be a standard Nova-class with short-ranged plasma arrays. While the hulls of the Selkanths did not appear to contain any survivors, Ch'lonas vessels have since adopted a wide berth around EA vessels, to the amusement of veterans of the border patrol. So far around eleven Goliaths have been built, with the intention of deploying them in mobile four-strong hunter-killer packs in areas where an entire squadron of David's would have been stationed, and total production is aimed for around three-hundred vessels by 2262.

Been far too long since I did anything lineart wise, so I thought I'd come back to my own B5verse designs. Can't say I was very happy with the David-class, it never did seem right, so after much tinkering (and a return to the original Nova colour-scheme) I've managed to produce this.

That's one heavily armed beast, great back story with impressive stats - was a great series, still got the box set somewhere - great work Reaperman
