Greetings WolfShipyard Community,

It's been some 7 years since I hung out or posted here on the wolfs shipyard forum. Recently I stumbled across some of the brilliant Battleship Yamato art by skaianDestiny, and others in the community here, and figured it was time to share my own work.

I found wolf's shipyards back in 2005, and the art posted here helped inspire me to take up the hobby of drawing similar styled pixel art of space ships for use in my role playing games, and to support the world building of my own space fantasy factions and empires. Over 15 years I have drawn something around 100 different space ships, varying greatly in size and art quality. Some are very small/simple pixel art of space fighters that are only 15-20 pixels across, or were hastily drawn in 2-3 minutes just so I could have something resembling the silhouette of a space ship to help players of the role playing game build a basic mental picture/reference, while others I have spent many hours working on in detail making properly scaled views from multiple angles.

Yesterday I compiled most of my various space ships into two large image files that are mostly all within the same scales, I labeled them and tried to group factions of space ships together. I'm going to provide link's to a copy of them I hosted on both imgur and Deviant art.

This first one is a collection of a space ships from various different space empires that I have all made up. Similar styled ships come from the same factions, and they all have their own flavor. For instance the collection of ships that look like a bunch of airships/blimps with scaffolding holding them together (at the bottom middle-leftist) are from the Kingdom of Yule, a faction that is very steam-punk/diesel-punkey with a technology level around World War 1, but have augmented their limited technology with magic (think like the kingdom in full metal alchemist anime).

This next image is a collection of ships all from the same faction (or collection of factions) ruled by the monstrous inhuman dimensional conquerors called the Splugorth. The Splugorth factions are form the role playing game Rifts published by Palladium Books. A few of the ships here were inspired by published artwork from Palladium Books, so I thought it prudent to separate these and cite the source material to give credit.

While this post is certainly a big dump of spaceship art work, I am really presenting it here to get some feedback.
I've been drawing these ships on my own for years now, and only sparingly have showed them off, so I haven't really gotten much feedback over the years.
Let me know which ones you think are cool, and which ships you think are ugly.
Feel free to praise my color pallet, give me advice on areas that I could improve, or let me know that you think my V-32 Patrol Frigate is drawn like trash.

Thanks in advance,
DD The Shmey

Pretty darn good work! I mostly do my own universe stuff myself, so it's nice to see another person creating fresh ships. The Rifts stuff is cool too; I got pretty deep into that universe for a while a long time ago.

That is a very nice collection of ships. Great work on those!
I recently (re)started to delve into the Megatraveller's universe that I knew a long time ago, having bought and played the game MT: Zhodani Conspiration on Atari 1040ST. I tried to draw some ships to help me extend that universe. That's time consuming but very rewarding at the end.

When David was alive, we used several of Wm. H. Keith's designs as the basis for several ships. I just wish that Traveller would model something similar to BSG, but it is sadly not to be.

Thanks for the comments guys,

In my last post a lot of the detail in the smaller fighters was difficult to make out in the first image so I put them together in a new image and blew them up to 2x scale to be easier to see (although maybe a little more blocky). It always amazes me how much detail I can convey in an image of a star fighter that is only 15 pixels across. Even at that low resolution you can put a lot of character in and get a good image for the silhouette of the craft. It's also not to difficult to scale up these simple fighter profiles and draw over the top of them with more detail to increase their resolution.

By the way, a comment on nomenclature, I use the term "runner" to be a size class of ships like the Millennium Falcon with a small crew (5-20). Interceptors are long range heavy fighter/patrol craft that can support a small crew 2-6. This terminology comes from Rifts Phase World.

Which fighters in particular do you like? Do you have a favorite?
