I prefer to think of Blood and Chrome as a story being told by an old retired Warrior to his grandchildren around the time of the fall. Most of the major points and events happened, but the tiny little details are slightly off as the old guy is trying to remember stuff that happened 40 years ago, and maybe his memory just isn't that sharp anymore.

Or maybe its all just a dream sequence...

No...it has all the trappings of a classic gunshop commando story. "There I was...it was back in 50 after the last big defeat and before we started kicking toaster ass, there was this secret mission...back then, Galactica had twice as many guns, no, three times as many guns, and they ran from her nose to her tail along the centerline..."

(half an hour later)

"I'll never forget the sight of Galactica when we returned...two rows of heavy kinetic turrets, one along the edge on each side of the head, and that big row of guns along the spine...what is it?"

"Um...didn't you say she had one row of guns?"

"You must have heard me wrong, boy...hell, I was there! You weren't even born yet!"

Hunting camp, gun shop, bar, the setting may change but the stories stay the same!

I was gonna say, it sounds like some cheesy campfire story filled with constantly changing details and lame plot twists (cough, becka'sworkingforthebadguys, cough).

okie iv now reread what i read. reason behind why the hull is weakened is because in the final season. one of the railguns was destroyed. however the ship was left with a massive whole in its place. meaning the railgun looked to have exploded from either a missile impact of some kind. hence the clear sence of weakness. of having so many guns in one place.... also the smaller turrets looks to be aa guns in place of the lower head section aa guns. and maybe the ship also only has the aa rail guns left on the head section. this makes the ship slightly vulnerable.

you cant see it that well in this image but the whole is clearly visible

I can see it and the logic behind the statement.

And yet this does nothing to explain why the guns were moved from the centerline to the sides over the span of about a week.

Just because they're railguns or coilguns doesn't mean they can't explode. Weapons like this need capacitors to store the energy charge to power the weapon. Think of them like a giant reusable flashbulb. They store the energy (it might take a few seconds to a few minutes to fully charge them), and then when its time to discharge it will discharge all to some of that energy in about 1/10,000th of a second or so. If one of those is damaged, all that energy will be discharged in a very uncontrollable manner.

It would be a textbook definition of a "very bad thing".

I don't buy the idea that they were removed because they were dangerous. Danger on a warship is a fact of life; if the hardware is dangerous then protocols and procedures are changed to mitigate the danger. Compare the ammunition handling performance of the Royal Navy up to Jutland and then in WW2. Many of the same ships were involved in both conflicts, but post Jutland the RN took a long hard look at their ammunition handling procedures and changed them. HMS Hood notwithstanding, their losses due to ammunition handling and magazine issues dropped significantly.

Hood wasn't destroyed due to ammunition handling she took plunging fire to a magazine through a battlecruiser's thin armoured deck, people forget Hood was not a battleship but was facing one, HMS Prince of Wales was a battleship, took the same hits, took damage but lived to fight another day.

the irony of the hood was that she was due to come in for refit to address the issue where her armor was thin.

i think part of the reason the g's back broke on her last jump, was her pods were extended. i think the reason why the pods were supposed to be retracted when she jumps was to provide additional support to her spine.

I'll find the citation; it was in something I recently read and was supposedly the new theory on what happened to Hood. The thin armor played a part, but IIRC, there were some other issues involved, too.

I just find that silly numbers of turrets to be unpleasant form a story and aesthetics point of view. It looks completely ridiculous to see that many turrets on the ship, when the 24 and 30 that the other ships carry look well laid out. The Valkyrie is a bit overdone, but her turrets appear to be much smaller in nature, and I don't see a lot of point defense, so many of them are going to be firing defensively once she closes the range. Thus I have no real issues there.

But Galactica looks like an over eager porcupine on crack. It offends the eye to see those turrets to clustered like that.

Even when someone with a real talent for it like CanisD takes a crack at the concept, any Battlestar with much more than 30 turrets or so rapidly starts to look overburdened by turrets really.
