I don't think those were actually turbolasers, but rather heavy laser cannon, not to mention much, much better targeting systems (hey, the Empire's a bunch of cheapskates), also, the Cylons are apparently thwarted by the unpredictability of the Vipers (and don't care about casualties, as indicated by the Kamikaze attacks upon Atlantia in the pilot)...

I believe the Cylon Raiders were more of a threat to Battlestars than Vipers were to Basestars due to the fact that they were more than likely intended as strike or bomber craft, hence they mount anti-ship weapons. This would also make them slow and therefore more susceptible to attack by true fighters like the Vipers.

Pretty much what my read on it was as well. I sort of think this was still the intention in the new series as well, with the Basestars acting as semi-mobile starbases, Battlestars acting as the combat carriers and heavy gunboats, Raiders being intended for a more multirole duty but still a bit more focused on attack and strike, and Vipers being the aerospace superiority platforms.

When the Cylons went their own way, the Colonials suddenly found themselves without mobile defense stations and fighting heavy assault platforms, without strike fighters and fighting those same threats, and without shock infantry forces at all really.

I would bet the Colonial Marines underwent a considerable degree of expansion, along with the Fleet of course. I do find myself wondering what the nature of air breathing defense forces was like though. Were they even still in use?

I'm sorry for my ignorance, but what is meant by "TA"?

Terran Alliance officer upon seeing the approaching Colonial Fleet - "RELEASE THE KRAKEN!!!"

I can't believe no one else has posted this quip...
