Hopefully by the end of the weekend or Monday I'll be posting an essay about the Courtesans giving some detail on them, how they're organized, and a bit more about what they do. It's been nagging at me since I posted Xanadu and I need to record my ideas and figured I'd share them.

I've been in a holding pattern for a couple days...there were some electrical issues that didn't get sorted out until this afternoon when they replaced the breaker box. Now I have A/C again and can get back to working on the work.

Electrical issues are a pain in the backside. I thought I had an issue due to lights flickering, but it was just a LED bulb starting to fail.

One of the issues they found was that somewhere more than 30 years ago, someone cut through most of one of the main cables, then just wrapped electrical tape around it. The electrician was surprised that we even had functional outlets!

I was doing research on sex workers for the Courtesan essay and my eyes were opened to both the historical varieties of "prostitution" and the modern numbers. Roughly .8 to .9 percent of American residents are in the business, which converts to roughly 31 in 10,000. On the other end of the spectrum, you have Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, Russia, and Latvia, which have respectively 368, 325, 208, and 150 per 10,000 residents.

There are ~42,000,000 prostitutes in a world population of 7.6 billion residents. If this is extrapolated to a Colonial population of ~28 Billion, then there are ~155 million in the business, or if you use the 50 billion population number, then the number rises to 277 million, or roughly the entire population of the United States circa 1999.

Kurt, are those numbers reflecting those that forced into it or those who are doing it willingly? I kinda suspect the numbers are much higher.

Those numbers are based on estimates from the UN and other sources. When you expand the scope to include "sex workers" who are camgirls, adult performers who do "dates", and so on, then I think the numbers would be much higher, especially in Europe, Asia, and North America. Some countries just don't have numbers, while others, especially New Zealand who has completely decriminalized sex work for both the worker and payer, seem artificially low at first read.

Here's the Wiki page I used: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostitut ... by_country (I chose this because it has an extensive list of sources).

I must admit, this is a rabbit hole that keeps going and going.

It's coming along slowly...ran into a major case of writer's block and had to work through it.

Need some world building help...

For the Courtesan's Guild, I'm getting hung up on titles within the hierarchy. I had thought to use the old guild titles (Apprentice, Journeyman, Master), but they seem to fall short and are too limited for an organization that could number more than 100 million members. Then I thought that since this was, in its own way, a pseudo-religious order (I would think they'd be close to certain deities) that I'd use some of the religious titles, suitably modified, from this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_r ... and_styles

Any thoughts?

I agree with being semi - religious, use the old terms, take away the commercial aspect, mix them up between the different gods of Greece a nd Egypt. It could work.
