Folks,

There was a comment in the Lady H discussion about a wiki for the story and I'm all for it. I can host three different flavors, but I'd prefer if someone took point on the day to day "admin" of it. This isn't because I don't want to do it...I do, but rather (at least for the MediaWiki) it's a issue of sorting through all the configuration stuff that I'm not 100% up to speed on.

So...here's the pitch...I'll host and get the wiki installed if someone is willing to do the configuration and such. Then it will be open for people to add to it as they want. I have three options:

MediaWiki - this is the same core software that runs Wikipedia and might be a bit more than what we need.
PM Wiki - this sounds a little easier to use and might be more in line with what we need.
WikkaWiki - this looks like a framework that requires plugins to add functionality that's found in the other packages.

My initial thought was to go with the gold standard, MediaWiki, but right now I think ease of use and control might be a better option which leads me to PM Wiki. I doubt the site will ever need to deal with the volume or sheer size that Wikipedia deals with, so PM Wiki might be a better option.

I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts.

PmWiki looks good untill you get to the editing of a page, without WYSIWYG editing it's going to be a bit confusing for some people, which will put them off.

Wikka doesnt have WYSIWYG editing either & MediaWiki says "Partial, via extensions".

Ugh. The editing is a nice feature to have.

If you go for a wikia we can pinch templates off Halo-Fanon since I know the architecture to get it working.

I prefer not to use a third party Wiki and want to keep complete control and ownership "in house" so to speak.

Hi Kurt,

I would be more then happy to help out on the Wiki. I've never run one before, but more then happy to learn and give it go.
I have been trying to keep track of things myself but it's hard to keep up at times! I have also saved a lot of your background posts as well, which would be useful information to have on the Wiki.

Would also be great to add in the artwork on the Wiki.. like the 40k Wiki with the ships, they have pictures as well.

What do you think?

I would advise avoiding using something with an over reliance on WYSIWYG editors, I find that they tend to mess up tables and cause issues for the readability of the markup editor.
I'd offer to help out with this, having worked a fair bit with wikis before, but I'm utterly swamped currently. If you're still in need of help come the summer I'd likely be able to then.

I figured that the drawings could be incorporated into the wiki, too.

Despite my misgivings using a third party to host the wiki, I've gone ahead and created one on Wikia. Anyone who wishes to contribute is free to do so, just let me know so I can thank you.

Hey Kurt,

I have started placing stuff on the Wiki. It will take me a while. I hope to ad more in time, but I like the way this is at the moment.
Once I get the chapters out the way, I will start on Character Bio's, ships and fleets.

Once I have added the ships and fleets I will let you know so we can start looking at the pictures side of things.

Just a quick update on the Wiki.

We now have 64 pages on the Wiki. That is because I have added the template for each of the 46 chapters and 8 odd Vingettes.
So if anyone has a favorite chapter, have at it!!!
I have only place the summary for Chapter one. I am up to chapter 14 for locations and people.

Happy editing!!

I will give it a try at adding/editing pages and see how it goes. Just a try for the moment.

I am a bit annoyed though by the amount of advertising. With my very low end ADSL (512kb/s), pages take some time to display. Is it something manageable on our side or inherent to this wiki (the quantity of ads)?

AdblockPlus tells me it blocked 15 ads on the home page, but, I didn't get any displayed to me. :)
