So, quarantine has converted all my classes to online, as well as shut down most things at work. This frees up quite a lot of extra time for me. So, I decided to start doing a little writing once all the honey-do tasks were completed. It got out of hand though. This is a pseudo, wiki-style entry for the Virgon Royal Navy in my little verse, circa just prior to return of the Cylons. It is mostly based on a shortened version of the wikipedia entry for the UK Royal Navy, though I've tried to avoid pinning myself down to specific fleet strengths or personnel numbers such as what's included in that article.

Looking for any questions, comments, or concerns you guys might find with it. Other entries will follow as I complete them.

Virgon Royal Navy (Space)

The Royal Navy is the Virgon Empire’s deep space warfare and interstellar force and one of the 3 fighting arms of the Virgon National Guard. It consists of the Grand Fleet, the Fleet Aerospace Service, the Fleet Auxiliary, and the Royal Marines; prior to the Cylon War, it also included the reserve for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. The Royal Navy forms part of the Reserve Component of the United Colonies Fleet along with the National Guard forces from the rest of the 12 Colonies. The current missions of the Royal Navy include the planetary defense of Virgon, Hibernia, Pallas, Troy, and Virgon’s interstellar dependencies, search and rescue, customs and law enforcement, and the protection of the royal family through its Royal Marines branch.

Created in 1475 by Empress Morgana V as the Imperial Space Administration (ISA), it is the oldest continuous space going service in the Colonies; amongst the Virgonese at least, it is known as the Senior Service. As the ISA, its original purpose was to coordinate the space activities of the various Virgonese Duchies and non-government companies. A previous, sea-going, Royal Navy operated on the oceans of Virgon from the time of Colonization until the Military Realignment Proclamation in 1474, which renamed that service as the Imperial Maritime Service (a non-military governmental search and rescue and law enforcement organization) and freed the name for the future space going organization. The ISA was turned into a military force and renamed the Royal Navy in 1546 amid the rising tensions of the Leonean Cold War.

Imperial Space Administration

Space flight began on Virgon in the 14th century, less than a century after the unification of the planet under the Empire of Boskirk. At that time, nesicant space programs were run by the individual feudal duchies which made up the Imperial Union of Virgon instead of through an royal program. The Crown of Boskirk, still in debt from the Unification Wars, did not have the finances to nationalize the various programs; instead, Royal Assent was given to the most successful programs as a way to increase competition and advance progress.

Following recontact with the tribes of Leonis in 1470 however, with several permanent settlements on the moon of Hiberia and orbital space above Virgon becoming dangerously overcrowded, Empress Morgana V ordered the creation of an imperial space program which combined the ducal programs and several private space companies. The Imperial Space Administration’s official mission was to manage and regulate space travel over Virgon and to conduct exploration and research missions throughout the Beta system. As part of its exploration missions, the ISA sent drone missions to study Troy and the moons of Hera, manned missions to Leonis and Pallas, and established a permanently manned outpost on Pallas in 1481 along with a joint mission consisting of several Leonian space agencies. The ISA also coordinated with the space agencies on Leonis to operate a system of messenger drones to facilitate interplanetary communications; the drones were replaced by a system of relay buoys during the 1490’s and 1500’s after the Revolutions of Fire on Leonis.

Royal Navy

Since its formation in 1546, the Royal Navy has vied with Leonis for space supremacy. From the middle of the Virgon-Leonis War and onward, the Royal Navy was humanity’s most powerful space force until it was surpassed by the United Colonial Fleet during the Cylon War. Prior to and after the introduction of the faster-than-light jump engine, the Royal Navy has played a key role in expanding the Virgon Empire throughout the human sphere of influence.

During the Cylon War, Virgon would be the final signatory to the Articles of Colonization after amendments were added to appease the government of Virgon. Pre-Colonization Virgonese law established the monarch as the legal owner and employer of the Virgonese armed forces, including the Royal Navy. As a signatory to the Articles, Virgon was obligated to help create a United Colonial Fleet (UC Fleet) and most of the Royal Navy’s assets and personnel were loaned to the Fleet for the duration of the hostilities. Nevertheless, several older and non-combat capable vessels were retained by the Royal Navy in orbit of Virgon for the use of the Crown. Following the defeat of the Cylons, the Royal Navy was transformed into its current status as a national guard fleet with the return of several ships from the UC Fleet that had been replaced by new construction. However, reductions in funding in recent years has seen many of its older vessels decommissioned along with a continuing personnel shortage.

The Royal Navy maintains a fleet of technologically sophisticated fighters and warships along with a small number of older Cylon War vessels which have been returned from service with the UC Fleet. As part of the UC Fleet Reserves, the Royal Navy is subject to the same standards and regulations as the active duty Fleet. While UC Fleet regulations limit the numbers and types of weapons available on newly built vessels, each national guard fleet is encouraged to produce unique designs using standard parts in order to retain experienced ship builders throughout the Colonies; UC Fleet ship designs are sometimes chosen from proven designs in national guard fleets.

Command, Control, and Organisation

The titular head of the Royal Navy is the Lady High Admiral, a position which has been held by Empress Katherina since 1992. The Sovereign is the Commander-in-Chief of the Virgon National Guard, and of the Virgon armed forces prior to the Articles of Colonization. The Royal Navy is part of Her/His Majesty’s National Guard, which also includes the Virgon Army and the Royal Aerospace Force. Prior to the Articles, the Royal Navy was part of the Virgon Armed Forces along with the Virgon Army, Royal Aerospace Force, and the Imperial Guard. The professional head of the Royal Navy is the Black Lord who is an admiral, a member of the Virgon Inner Council, and a peer of the land per tradition. The Inner Council delegates the day-to-day management of the Royal Navy to the Admiralty Board, which contains only naval officers and civil servants and is chaired by the Black Lord. The Admiralty Board is based in Empress Morgana Hall in Rothal, outside of Boskirk county.

The Fleet Commander has responsibility for the provision of ships and aerospace craft ready for any operations required by the government of Virgon or the UC Fleet. The Fleet Commander exercises their authority through the Navy Headquarters, based at HMSS Excellent in geosynchronous orbit over Boskirk. Operational headquarters are co-located with the dockyard stations in the Albion and Plymouth systems, and on the moon of Clyde in the Rosyth system, to facilitate communications with naval and marine units in the dependencies.

The Royal Navy’s officer training takes place at the Imperial Naval College at Torpoint in the Duchy of Denov, which is accredited by the UC Fleet Academy. Enlisted personnel undertake basic training at one of 3 bases on Virgon, or at the training base on Albion. Specialized training for officers and enlisted is conducted in association with the UC Fleet at bases throughout the Colonies.

Vessels in service with the Royal Navy use the prefix HMS (Her/His Majesty's Ship) except when seconded to the UC Fleet, where the prefix is dropped. Ship names are assigned by a ship naming sub-committee of the Admiralty Board, and submitted for approval to the UC Fleet (to avoid naming conflicts among the various services) and then to the Lady High Admiral for Royal Assent.
