Introducing Commander Raisa Lafayette of the Erisian gunstar Libertatem and scion of the House of Lafayette of Troubadour. Also being introduced is Anne-Marie Lafayette, Duchess of Troubadour Marches, her mother and Senior Chief Thaddeus Marquette, her batman.

A "batsman" in military terms is from British use when the officer had a valet/servant/personal cook.

You peaked my interest, so about being MIA, but Eversice the ground was dry enough I've been going all out to clear my property for this years fire season. The ladies say hello, but they wanted me to say they thought the the ending seemed rushed, but FYI there wasn't a dry eye at the last line.

Glad you and the ladies enjoyed it! Reading back over the ending, I would agree, it does seem a little rushed. Given the page count, I started editing and probably got a little over zealous.

That’s an understatement, my grandfather was a Batman to a General in WW2, he was basically an aide & a bodyguard. He drove the jeep, carried maps, acted as a courier carrying messages to other officers, rounded up people he wanted/needed to talk to, did paperwork, protected him when they went into combat, but most importantly, he was the eyes & ears at the soldier level reporting how the troops were doing (they were more likely to talk to a Corporal than an officer, especially a General), to put it simply, anything the boss needed doing, he did.

Cool! I'm trying to bring in some non-American terms and practices where possible and applicable in the story.

Just a quick update...I did about six pages this evening which brings the total to about 17 and half. The more I'm working on this, the more I think the chapter/vignette will focus solely on the Earth Union, Erisian, Chrome Brigades, and Civilian stories originating in Plouton's Cauldron.

Plouton, or Pluto, was Hades' name after the underworld began to be referred to as "Hades". The Latin version of the name is Pluto, while the Greek is Πλούτων, or phonetically, Plouton.

:-)

Just did about five pages or so, the word count is up to 10,946 and is sitting at 23 full pages. This segment told the story from the inside...and the hopelessness of watching everything fall apart and then forging on despite the odds.
