Hey Kurt, sorry about not getting back sooner but life sucks and then you wake up and do it all over. Now the ladies, there was a collective grown and the words " NOT MORE NEW CHARACTERS",

LOL! Yes...but necessary for the longer range elements of the story.

then Sister Judith wants to know what Happened to Iris Site is and the Conqueror?

Iris Sotiria is still on Ariadne; she wasn't strong enough to transfer immediately to Olympus and then they were dispatched early to return to the Communion/Colonies. Conqueror is still where it was left, the Olympians are still a little hesitant to return to that system for some reason...

But the best reaction was Sister Margaret, aha actually growled when it was revealed the porno studio, and quipped " at least that colonial couple will be able to find work" yeh shock us too. But you had to push it with the poly relationship, didn't you, well she hissed then laid her head back an said " what an I going to do with That boy" so welcome to Sister Margaret's "that boy" club, there are 5 of us and one " that Damn boy" club. All said and done it was a good read. Well done again.

The poly relationship may or may not happen. I find that the interpersonal relationships are one of the best ways to underscore that these are different cultures and not just "Yanks in space" as so much science fiction seems to be. "That boy", eh? :-) At least she didn't say, "bless his heart". ;-)

Please pass my regards on to the ladies and I think they're going to like something that happens in the next chapter.

LOL! Most are monogamous, it's just that the poly relationships stand out.

I have a number of good friends and relation who are southern born and bred, and "bless his/her heart" is one of those Southern Belle sayings that carry two meanings...the polite and the profane, because good girls don't say bad things about people. ;-)

Despite wanting to work on the next chapter while I was on break, I pretty much lived the life of a lush with a dog. Anyway, the first two pages were completed tonight and we're back on track. My guess is that we're looking about Labor Day or thereabouts for the next chapter.

Hmm...Not so much as a teaser as it might be considered "world building or backstory"...

You've noticed that when the various characters discuss their times at the Academy they refer to themselves as "cadets", with a recent example being the young adults (can't really call them kids anymore...that was brutally ripped away from them...) on Atropos where they were "Cadet Lieutenants" and such. So why not the more traditional "Midshipman", which has traditionally been associated with navies and fleets?

The answer is simple but nuanced. A cadet, or Cadet (officer rank) is what a student at an Academy or going through ROTC is called while they are attending class. This is because until they are commissioned, while they are officers-in-training and are due the respect of an officer, they do not have the authority to command or issue commands. If they are chosen to go on a cruise during the "summer break", then they are temporarily given the rank of Midshipmen as a courtesy and that gives them the ability issue commands and orders.

Midshipmen, traditionally within the Colonial Fleet (and prior to that, the individual colony fleets), are those enlisted or non-commissioned officers who have entered into a sort of "on the job training" program where they are mentored by a commissioned officer of at least several years' service, and treated and given respect as an officer, but everyone knows that the "blank diamonds" are somewhere between a Petty Officer and Ensign with training wheels. In short, it is a method to give a promising crew member a chance to become an officer without having to attend college or the Academy.

The program gives the Midshipman a chance to lead, issue orders, and pretty much be an officer, with the understanding that they may be commissioned in as short as six months, to as long as several years if at all, depending on their performance and the needs of the ship or service.

So, bringing this back to a teaser, a crew member who has been mentioned previously has been in this program and it is mentioned within the opening pages of the chapter.

From a personal perspective, I wanted to incorporate some elements of the age of sail because I'm a big Hornblower fan and fell in love with the era when I read Forester's "Mr. Midshipman Hornblower" when I was in fourth or fifth grade.
