No, that wouldn't work unless you had some way to apply a zero-friction coating to the bearing surfaces. Even with the best lubricants and polished surfaces, you will need to continually maintain the rotational speed through adding energy into the system (thrust or force of some sort). That said, a solid surface that is designed to retain heat is much more efficient than transparent domes that account for ~60%+ of the cylinder surface. ;-)

No again, your thinking Earth, read up on perpetual motion and stop thinking in Earth terms. I’m thinking space, there are no such restrictions in space, what friction, there’s no friction in a liquid. no gravitational pull, no external forces = no heat so no need for friction coatings. Hey I used to work in engineering, never underestimate the power of a fluid lubricant as opposed to a conventional bearing.

There is friction in space, just not with the environment, the friction would occur between ship sections meant to keep everying together, the rotating section would have to travel on runners of some kind or it could wobble, and wobble means disaster in a massive structure. Best bet would be maglev rails.

How you connect the moving grav drum to power, water and personnel/cargo traffic, now that's a whole bigger engineering challenge.

Yes your right a big headache 50Stone . Maglev is a very useful form of travel and could be utilised.

Events in the fleet had taken an unfortunate turn, the military leadership left reeling.

Sire Galen however could not afford to be deflected from his mission and pressed on with the new 'Discovery Fleet'.

He had been presented with many logistical, design and manpower problems, the latter now fortunately overcome with the return of his key engineers and construction teams from the surface having completed the TERRADACA complex.

Having successfully masterminded the two new Mega Agro Ships and the new observatory ship Discovery now under construction, his thoughts turned to a problem that had vexed him, the senate and military equally, how to solve the lack of livestock and marine life on Terra.

Paradoxically, thanks to these new Agro Monsters, root vegetables and crops were aplenty, but meat and fish were scarce due to them leaving Earth with very limited herds of animals with which to breed and feed the masses. This also led to the problem of a weak blood line and poor quality breeding stock.

A meeting of the council agreed that 'Project Discovery' should be given extra cash and resources, Galen's hand had been strengthened by his articulate argument for using the colonial technology as a bargaining chip with the people of Earth

All agreed that the journey to Earth should be, not only an attempt to warn Earth of the Cylons, but also establish trade links if possible with the promise of sharing colonial technology in exchange for manpower and livestock to return to Terra.

Hence the 'ARK' project was born, two vessels were designed with the help once more of the ever more influential Cylons, Lucifer and Spectre.

The first vessel would be for the transport of livestock, birds and land mammals in its many holds, together with the very best scientists on the upper decks to provide information on each individual species.

She was to be known as the 'Ark of the Stars....

The second, sister vessel was for the transportation of ocean creatures ranging from the smallest right up to small Whales, those that were too large to transport would have D.N.A harvested and recreated on Terra using their advanced technology.

This vessel was to be known as the 'Ark of the Seas'....

Here she is on the ocean surface;

And finally fully submerged;

Both were essentially space faring vessels but the 'Ark of the Seas' by definition was designed to enter the ocean, the
'Ark of the Stars' could also be converted to an ocean going vessel, should the need arise.

During a time of upheaval for the senate and uncertainty in the military, Sire Galen seized his opportunity to become possibly the most important figure in the new colony.

Events in the military threatened to spill over into outright anarchy between rivals headed by Galactica's Blue Squadron and the legendary Silver Spar from the Pegasus.

Meanwhile the honeymoon period for the newly appointed President Valentine was coming to a close despite his early promise.

This all helped to boost Galen's kudos and buy him precious time to build a formidable fleet, the newly named 'Discovery' fleet to be sent to Earth.

Adama was having difficulty in persuading the senate to allow more than one Battlestar to leave the orbit of Terra, so Galen came up with a short term compromise, a supply ship large enough to not only resupply the Battlestar with vipers, shuttles and supplies, but also act as a support ship for the entire civilian fleet and a sister vessel to the Galileo.

He took the hull design previously used for the Galileo, Solaris and Stormseeker to come up with a modular design containing individual interchangeable pods, thus allowing for the pods to be resupplied away from the main vessel in order to save time and congestion during replenishment.

The ship was regarded as the workhorse of the Discovery fleet, and the hull design was henceforth classed as the Hercules Hull.

This is the frontline supply ship Hercules....

Here I have shown her with some pods open to illustrate the viper, shuttle and cargo holding capabilities....

Thanks to Barricade for the borrow.

It had become apparent to all in the hierarchy that bargaining chips would be needed to persuade those in power on Earth to co-operate in the exchange of manpower and resources for technology and protection.

It was known from information gleaned from the satellite recovered from Earth that they were not as ready to co-exist as those from the colonies and as such the Discovery fleet would need to make the leaders of Earth an offer they simply could not refuse.

The technology to yield greater crop harvests, to bolster the military in readiness for the potential arrival of the Cylons were two such factors, another critical one was the need for the people of Earth to eradicate diseases, viruses and other debilitating ailments.

To this end it was agreed to send not one, but two medical vessels to Earth, one was a hospital ship, primarily for the use of the fleet in case of attack, but also to offer critical medical aid to those with special skills and a willingness to work with the fleet.

In homage to the people of Earth, this vessel was named after the famous lady of the lamp, Florence Nightingale....

The second sister vessel, was a scientific and medical research vessel, her mission, to help eradicate the most virulent of diseases, cancers and viruses from the planet Earth.

Again as an homage to Earth, this vessel was named after a famous French chemist and microbiologist, famous for creating the first vaccines for rabies and anthrax, Louis Pasteur....
