Hello, I know it's been a long time since I posted anything on here and I'm sorry for that R\L sucks your spare time away. I have a few questions for a story that rolling around in my head.

1st) how many vipers and raptors can a Columbia class 2 B\S hold I'm thinking 120\40.

2nd). Is the Jupiter class B\S the precursor to the Mercury class

3rd). I am thinking about using a battlecarrier ( smaller cruiser with two pods holding 20 vipers and 5 factors each) or should go with a light battlestar?

4th) an AU is 93 millions roughly, did they measure jumps in AU or light years (5.88 trillion miles = one light year)

Hope some one can help thanks in advance.

Welcome back!

A rule of thumb that I've used for most designs is that I count the total number of launch tubes and then double it. If the pods are exceptionally wide, then I might triple it, and only in rare instances will I go higher. For me, it becomes an issue of quickly recovering the airwing if the ship has to quickly leave the area; will the flight decks be able to handle a chaotic combat landing where the small craft land all over the deck without much organization.

From a design evolution, I don't see it. If you're going solely by what was shown in the episodes/movies, the only thing I could state for certain is that the Mercury class was post war, probably within the past twenty or twenty-five years.

Depends on what you're hoping to accomplish. What are "factors"? Raptors?

It's more specifically known as a SU, or Stellar Unit in the show. See: http://www.battlestarwiki.org/SU The documented materials, confirmed by the show's science advisor, Keven Grazier, is that Colonial computers are capable of calculating a jump of up to 999,999 SU, or 15.81 light years.

Hope this helped!

The BSG Wiki is back, and I'd take that for as close to canon as it can be, especially if they can directly tie it to something that one of the principals posted. If you have a chance, there's a PDF floating around that's the "Science of Battlestar Galactica" written by Kevin Grazier, NASA scientist and science advisor for the show.

Thank you very much for this help, and yes factor is a raptor ( sorry using my tablet ,laptop went belly up). I was always thinking that there had to be more than the mercury class, columbia class and valkyrie class battlestars in the fleet. The battlecarrier I was thinking of using as a lead ship in a escort group, and once again thank you lots to work on.

Glad to help!

On the Raptors, I tend to try and have at least one squadron per pod, with a minimum of about 20% of the Viper totals. One of the SOPs that I tried to build into Lady H was that a standard patrol was four Vipers and one Raptor, if combat was expected, then a second Raptor could be added. These would provide EW, AEW/C, as well as guided weapons control and carriage.
